State-Specific GS Locality Adjustments

Government workers’ final General Schedule pay is established throughout all of the United States based on a local adjustment based on their duty location.

The amount of salary adjustment that’s applied to your salary is determined through the general Schedule place where you work. Locality adjustment zones are divided into 53 categories, and an an additional category known as “Rest of United States.”

Payroll Schedules in General

When it comes to white-collar federal civilians The General Schedule Pay Scale is the most widely used of pay scales. In the General Schedule, you will find an additional 1.5 million federal employees. Administrative jobs, managerial roles, and technical positions are all readily available.

Alongside in addition to the Federal Wage Grade Schedule (FWS) which is employed for blue-collar, hourly positions and the Senior Executive Service (SES), which is used for senior executive positions, which are higher than the most senior GS post The Foreign Service Schedule (FS) that is used by Foreign Service members; and at least 12 other alternative or experimental pay schedules there are a variety of alternative pay scales to choose from.

In 2016, thirteen new locality areas were established. At present, there are 47 locality regions — geographic places around the country where employees receive additional compensation to make up for higher living expenses. The last time the boundaries of locality areas were altered was in 2006.

There are three parts to The General Schedule pay system that serve to establish your compensation under your General Schedule system. The three most important considerations are:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The connection between grades and the professional route is well-documented. Every profession comes with a list of entry-level grades. Your initial grade is determined by the educational background and your work experience. Then, as you go along your path, you’ll be granted grade increments that lead to promotions. These increments in pay are often granted in response to performance and supervisory evaluations of employees.

Grades are assigned on a scale from 1 to 15 which is 15 being the top. The grades are usually written using the abbreviation of pay plan, an hyphen, and the grade number in the middle, as follows the General Schedule grade 13 will be marked with the letters GS-13.

From 1 to 15, the highest grades is the grade 15 and the lowest grade is grade 1. grades are usually written with the abbreviation for pay plans, an hyphen, and the grade number following it. For example, below: GS-13 is the abbreviation of General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The word “step” refers to the amount of time that someone has been employed by the government. Every grade has 10 steps, with the first step being the most difficult. Increasing the number of steps is automatically rewarded in regular increments as long as the minimum performance criteria are met.

After 52 weeks, the first three steps are automatically sent to you. After two years (2 year) in the current step, the next three-step increments are granted. After 156 weeks, the final three phases are revealed (3 year). Once you reach the last tenth step, you will have no chance to raise your step anymore.

You can get step increases in recognition of your accomplishments in certain conditions. Quality Step Increases describe step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

Location is the final aspect taken into consideration when determining pay levels in a particular area. Locality adjustments are intended so that federal wages are comparable to those of equivalent private-sector employees in a given region. If you are employed in a specific region in the country then your General Schedule pay rate will be increased by a specific percentage.

Right now, there are 47 different neighborhood districts to pick from! Large metropolitan areas like New York, Washington, D.C., along with San Francisco are home to most of the locality rate in the United States. Depending on where you reside you could see a rise of 14 percent to more than 30 percentage.
