Payroll Schedules in General

In the case of white collar federal civilian personnel that are federal civilians, the General Schedule Pay Scale is the most frequently used of pay scales. In the General Schedule, it is home to more than 1.5 million government employees. Administrative positions, management roles and technical jobs are all open.

In addition to the Federal Wage Grade Schedule (FWS), which is used to fill blue-collar positions that are hourly in addition to The Senior Executive Service (SES) is used to fill senior executive positions, which are higher than the top GS post and the Foreign Service Schedule (FS) that is used by Foreign Service members; and at minimum, 12 alternate or experimental pay schedules, there are other alternative pay scales available.

In 2016 a total of thirteen new locality areas were created. At present, there are 47 locality areas -geographical regions across the country where workers receive a higher salary to compensate for living costs that are higher. The last time that the boundaries of locality regions were changed was in the year 2006.

There are three parts to The General Schedule pay system that can be used to determine your compensation within your General Schedule system. The three primary considerations are as follows:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The relationship between grade and professional path is well documented. Every profession comes with a list of entry-level grades. Your grade at the beginning will be determined by your academic background and your work experience. Later, as you progress throughout your professional career you’ll get grade advancements that be reflected in promotions. Pay grade increases are often granted in response to performance and supervisor evaluations of the employee.

Grading is done in a range from 1 to 15 and 15 being the most high. Graduations are typically written using the pay plan abbreviation, an hyphen, and the grade number after it, as follows: The General Schedule grade 13 is identified by an GS-13 letter.

From 1 to 15, the highest grade is grade 15, while the lowest is grade 1. grades are normally written with the abbreviation “pay plan” an hyphen, and the grade number after it. As you can see below: GS-13 would be the abbreviation of General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The term “step” refers to the duration of time an individual has worked for the government. Each grade is comprised of 10 steps, with the first one being the least difficult. The increase in the number of steps is automatically rewarded at regular type increments as long as the minimum performance criteria meet.

After 52 weeks, the first three steps are automatically sent to you. After two years (2 year) in the current step, the subsequent three-step increases are granted. After an additional 156 weeks, the remaining three phases are exposed (3 three years). After you complete the tenth step, you will be unable to raise your step any further.

It is possible to obtain step increments as a reward for great success in certain scenarios. Quality Step Increases are used to describe step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

Location is the last element that is considered when determining the pay rate in a given region. Locality adjustments aim in order to make sure that Federal pay are in line with those of comparable private sector employees in a given region. If you’re employed in specific area of the nation the General Schedule salary is increased by a particular percentage.

Right now, there are 47 different neighborhood districts to pick from! Large metropolitan areas like New York, Washington, D.C. along with San Francisco are home to most of the locality rate throughout the United States. Based on the location you reside in you could see a rise of 14 percent to over 30%.
