State-Specific GS Locality Adjustments

The final pay for government employees’ General Schedule pay is established throughout the United States based on a location adjustment that is based on the place of duty.

The amount of pay adjustment applied to your wages is determined through the general Schedule place where you are employed. Zones for adjustment to localities are classified into 53 categories. There is an an additional category known as “Rest of United States.”

Payroll Schedules in General

For white-collar federal civilians The General Schedule Pay Scale is the most extensively utilized of pay scales. In the General Schedule, there are greater than 1.5 million government workers. Administrative positions, management roles, and technical positions are all readily available.

In addition to the Federal Wage Grade Schedule (FWS) that is utilized to fill blue-collar positions that are hourly as well as the Senior Executive Service (SES) that is utilized for high-level executive positions above the top GS positions The Foreign Service Schedule (FS) that is used by Foreign Service members; and at minimum, 12 alternate or experimental pay schedules, there are a variety of alternative pay scales to choose from.

In 2016 a total of thirteen new locality areas were added. As of now, there are 47 locality zones -geographical locations across the nation where workers receive a higher salary to compensate for the higher cost of living. The last time the boundaries of locality areas were changed was in 2006.

There are three elements to The General Schedule pay system that can be used to determine your salary under the General Schedule system. The three primary considerations are as follows:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The relation between grade and professional education is well-documented. Every profession comes with a range of entry-level grade levels. Your initial grade is determined by your educational background and your work experience. Later, as you progress throughout your professional career you’ll receive grade increases that lead to promotions. The increments to pay grades are often granted in response to performance and assessments by supervisors on the performance of the employee.

The grades are determined on a scale from 1 to 15 and 15 being the top. They are generally written with the abbreviation for pay plans, with a hyphen and the grade number in the middle, as follows: The General Schedule grade 13 will be denoted by”GS-13.

From 1 to 15, the most prestigious level is Grade 15, while the lowest grade is grade. grades are usually written with the abbreviation “pay plan” an hyphen, and the grade number following it, as seen below: GS-13 is the abbreviation used for General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The word “step” refers to the length of time someone has worked for the government. Each grade contains ten steps, with the first step being the most difficult. In addition, increasing the number of steps is automatically rewarded in regular increments, so long as the minimum requirements for performance meet.

In the course of 52 weeks, your first three steps will be sent to you. After the 104-week period (2 two years) in the current step, the next three-step increases are granted. After an additional 156 weeks, the remaining three phases are unveiled (3 months). If you are at the end of the tenth step, you will be unable to climb your steps any more.

You can get step increases in recognition of your achievement in certain circumstances. Quality Step Increases refer to step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

Location is the final aspect that is considered when determining the pay rate in a particular area. Locality adjustments are intended to ensure that federal salaries are similar to those paid to similar private sector employees within a given region. If you’re employed in a certain region of the nation then your General Schedule pay rate will be increased by a certain percentage.

At present, there are 47 different neighborhood districts to select from! The major cities like New York, Washington, D.C., along with San Francisco are home to the majority of the locality rates within the United States. Based on the location you reside in, you may see the rise from 14 percent or more than 30 percent.
