In the General Schedule, the total number of employees is more than 1.5 million federal employees. Administrative jobs, managerial roles technical and managerial positions are all available.

Three components are part of The General Schedule pay system that are utilized to establish your salary under this General Schedule system. The three most crucial considerations are:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The connection between grades and the professional route is well-documented. Every profession comes with a range of entry-level grade levels. The grade you start with will be determined by your academic background and experience. As you progress through your career, you’ll get grade advancements that lead to promotions. The increments to pay grades are typically granted due to performance and supervisor evaluations of the employee.

The grades are determined on a scale from 1 to 15 which is 15 being the top. Graduations are typically written using the abbreviation of pay plan, with a hyphen, as well as the grade number in the middle, as follows the General Schedule grade 13 would be marked with the letters GS-13.

From 1 up to 15, the highest class is grade 15, whereas the lowest grade is grade. grades are usually written with the abbreviation for pay plans, an hyphen, and the grade number after it. As you can see below: GS-13 is the abbreviation used for General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The term “step” refers to the amount of time an individual has worked for the government. Each grade is comprised of 10 steps with the beginning step being the most challenging. The increase in the number of steps is automatically rewarded with regular type increments, so long as the minimum performance criteria are met.

Within 52 days, the first three steps are sent automatically to you. After two years (2 years) in the current step, the subsequent three-step increments are granted. After 155.5 weeks, the final three phases are exposed (3 years). After you complete the tenth step, you will be unable to climb your step anymore.

You can get step increases to reward great success in certain scenarios. Quality Step Increases refer to step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

Location is the final aspect considered when determining pay rates for a particular region. Locality adjustments are made to ensure that federal wages are comparable to those of equivalent private sector workers in the specific region. If you’re employed in specific region in the country then your General Schedule salary is increased by a certain percentage.

Right now, there are 47 different neighborhood districts to pick from! Cities with major populations like New York, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco are home to the majority of locality fees in the United States. Depending on where you reside there is the rise from 14 percent to more than 30 percentage.
