The amount of pay adjustment applied to your pay is determined through the general Schedule the location where you work. Zones for adjustment to localities are classified into 53 categories, and an an additional category known as “Rest of United States.”

Payroll Schedules in General

For white-collar federal civilian personnel and civilians, the General Schedule Pay Scale is the most widely used of pay scales. The General Schedule is where the total number of employees is over 1.5 million government employees. Administrative, managerial technical and managerial positions are all available.

In addition to the Federal Wage Grade Schedule (FWS) which is employed for blue-collar, hourly positions as well as The Senior Executive Service (SES) that is utilized for high-level executive positions above the most senior GS positions as well as the Foreign Service Schedule (FS) that is utilized by Foreign Service members; and at least 12 other alternative or experimental pay plans, there are a variety of alternative pay scales available.

In 2016, thirteen new locality areas were created. There are 47 locality regions -geographical regions across the nation where employees are compensated extra for living costs that are higher. The last time that the boundaries of locality regions were changed was in 2006.

Three components are part of the General Schedule pay system that serve to establish your compensation within this General Schedule system. Three of the most important aspects are as follows:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The relationship between grade and the professional route is well documented. Every profession has a range of entry-level grade levels. Your grade at the beginning is determined by your education background and your work experience. In the course of progressing along your path, you will receive grade increases that result in promotions. These pay grade increments are usually granted due to performance and supervisory evaluations of employees.

The grades are determined according to a range of 1 to 15 15, with 15 being the most high. The grades are usually written using the abbreviation “pay plan” with a hyphen and the grade number in the middle, as follows The General Schedule grade 13 will be denoted by using the letters “GS13.

From 1 to 15, the highest grade is grade 15, the lowest is grade 1. Grades are typically written using the pay plan abbreviation, with a hyphen and the grade number following it. This is as shown below: GS-13 will be the abbreviation used for General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The word “step” refers to the duration of time an individual has worked for the government. Every grade has 10 steps, with first step being the most challenging. Growing the number of steps will be automatically rewarded in regular increments as long as the performance requirements meet.

Following 52 weeks the initial three steps will be sent to you. After the 104-week period (2 year) in the currently in-progress step, the next three-step increments are granted. After 156 weeks, the last three phases are exposed (3 year). After you complete the tenth step, you will not be able to increase your step any further.

It is possible to get step increases in recognition of your performance in certain situations. Quality Step Increases are used to refer to step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

Location is the final aspect to be considered when determining pay rates within a specific region. Locality adjustments aim so that federal payments are similar to those paid to equivalent private sector workers in the region. If you are employed in a particular region of the country, your General Schedule pay rate is boosted by a specific percentage.

There are currently 47 different neighborhood districts to choose from! Major metropolises such as New York, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco are home to the majority of locality rates within the United States. Depending on where you live you could see the rise from 14 percent to more than 30 percentage.
