The amount of compensation adjustment you receive to your wages is determined according to the General Schedule place where you are employed. Locality adjustment zones are subdivided into 53 categories. They also have an the additional category referred to as “Rest of United States.”

Payroll Schedules in General

For white-collar federal civilians that are federal civilians, the General Schedule Pay Scale is the most frequently used of pay scales. The General Schedule is where you will find over 1.5 million government employees. Administrative jobs, managerial roles and technical jobs are all open.

In addition to in addition to the Federal Wage Grade Schedule (FWS), which is used for blue-collar hourly positions and there is also the Senior Executive Service (SES) which is employed for high-level executive positions above the top GS positions as well as the Foreign Service Schedule (FS) which is employed by Foreign Service members; and at least 12 other or experimental pay schedules, there are a variety of alternative pay scales available.

In 2016, a total of thirteen new locality areas were created. There are 47 locality areas -geographical regions across the country where employees are compensated extra for higher living costs. The last time the boundaries of locality areas were altered was in the year 2006.

There are three parts to The General Schedule pay system that are utilized to establish your pay under this General Schedule system. The three most crucial considerations are:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The relation between grade and professional education is well-documented. Every profession has a number of entry-level levels. The grade you start with is determined by your education background and your work experience. Later, as you progress through your career, you’ll be granted grade increments that be reflected in promotions. These increments in pay are usually granted due to performance and reviews by the supervisors of the employee.

The grades are determined on a scale of 1 to 15 15, with 15 being the top. The grades are usually written using the abbreviation for pay plans, an hyphen, and the grade number after it, as follows The General Schedule grade 13 would be marked with the letters GS-13.

From 1 to 15, the top grades is the grade 15 while the lowest grade is grade 1. grades are typically composed using the abbreviation “pay plan” an hyphen, and the grade number after it. As you can see below: GS-13 is the abbreviation for General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The word “step” refers to the length of time someone has been employed by the government. Every grade has 10 steps, with first one being the least challenging. The increase in the number of steps will be automatically rewarded with regular type increments as long as the minimum requirements for performance meet.

In the course of 52 weeks, your initial three steps will be sent to you. After the 104-week period (2 year) in the present step, the following three-step increase is granted. After 155.5 weeks, the final three phases are exposed (3 year). After you complete the 10th step, you’ll be unable to climb your foot any further.

You can get step raises as a reward for great success in certain scenarios. Quality Step Increases are used to be a reference to step increases that are based on performance (QSI).

Locality

Location is the final element considered when determining pay rates in a given region. Locality adjustments are made for ensuring that federal payments are equivalent to the pay of similar private sector employees within the region. If you’re employed in certain region of the nation the General Schedule pay is increased by a specified percentage.

There are currently 47 neighborhood districts that you can pick from! Cities with major populations like New York, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco are home to the majority of locality rates across the United States. Depending on where you reside, you may see increases of up to 14 percent up to 30 percent.
