The amount of the salary adjustment that’s applied to your pay is determined in accordance with the General Schedule area in which you work. Locality adjustment zones are divided into 53 categories. They also have an an additional category known as “Rest of United States.”

Payroll Schedules in General

For white-collar federal civilian personnel that are federal civilians, the General Schedule Pay Scale is the most extensively utilized of the pay scales. The General Schedule is where the total number of employees is over 1.5 million government employees. Administrative positions, management roles, and technical positions are all open.

Alongside in addition to the Federal Wage Grade Schedule (FWS), which is used for blue-collarand hourly positions in addition to there is also the Senior Executive Service (SES) which is employed for senior executive positions, which are higher than the highest GS posts The Foreign Service Schedule (FS) that is utilized by Foreign Service members; and at least 12 other or experimental pay schedules, there are many other alternatives to pay scales.

In 2016 a total of thirteen new locality areas were created. As of now, there are 47 locality zones — geographic places around the country where workers receive a higher salary to compensate for living costs that are higher. The last time the boundaries of locality areas were altered was in the year 2006.

There are three components to The General Schedule pay system that serve to establish your compensation within this General Schedule system. The three primary considerations are as follows:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The connection between grades and the professional pathway is well documented. Every profession has a range of entry-level grade levels. Your starting grade is determined by the educational background and experience. Then, as you go along your path, you’ll receive grade increases that result in promotions. These increments in pay are usually granted as a result of performance and supervisory evaluations of employees.

Grades are assigned according to a range of 1 to 15 15, with 15 being the most high. Grades are commonly written with the abbreviation of pay plan, with a hyphen and the grade number after it, such as follows: The General Schedule grade 13 is denoted by an GS-13 letter.

From 1 to 15, the highest class is grade 15, while the lowest grade is grade 1. Grades are typically written using the abbreviation “pay plan” with a hyphen and the grade number after it. As you can see below: GS-13 would be the abbreviation for General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The word “step” refers to the duration of time an individual has been employed by the government. Each grade is comprised of ten steps, with the first one being the most difficult. Growing the number of steps will be automatically rewarded at regular type increments, provided that the minimum performance criteria meet.

After 52 weeks, the initial three steps are automatically sent to you. After 104 weeks (2 months) in the current step, the next three-step increase is granted. After 155.5 weeks, the final three phases are exposed (3 three years). Once you reach the last 10th step, you’ll not be able to increase your foot any further.

You can get step raises as a reward for great achievement in certain circumstances. Quality Step Increases are used to refer to step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

Location is the final aspect considered when determining pay rates in a given region. Locality adjustments are made so that federal salaries are equivalent to the pay of similar private sector employees within the specific region. If you’re employed in certain region of the nation the General Schedule pay rate will be increased by a specific percentage.

At present, there are 47 neighborhood districts that you can choose from! Major metropolises such as New York, Washington, D.C. along with San Francisco are home to most of the locality rate within the United States. If you live in one of these cities there is the rise from 14 percent or more than 30%.
