State-Specific GS Locality Adjustments

Government workers’ final General Schedule pay is established throughout the United States based on a locale adjustment depending on the place of duty.

The amount of pay adjustment applied to your salary is determined according to the General Schedule location in which you work. The zones for local adjustment are split into 53 categories, and an one category called “Rest of United States.”

Payroll Schedules in General

When it comes to white-collar federal civilians that are federal civilians, the General Schedule Pay Scale is the most frequently used of pay scales. The General Schedule is where there are an additional 1.5 million government workers. Administrative jobs, managerial roles and technical jobs are all available.

Alongside in addition to the Federal Wage Grade Schedule (FWS), which is used for blue-collar, hourly positions and The Senior Executive Service (SES) that is utilized for higher-level executive positions that are above the highest GS posts The Foreign Service Schedule (FS) which is employed by Foreign Service members; and at least 12 other alternative or experimental pay schedules, there are many other alternatives to pay scales to choose from.

In 2016 a total of thirteen new locality areas were created. There are 47 locality areas -geographical regions across the country where employees receive additional compensation to make up for higher living expenses. The last time the boundaries of locality zones were changed was in 2006.

There are three elements to The General Schedule pay system that can be used to determine your salary under this General Schedule system. Three of the most important aspects are:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The relation between grade and the professional pathway is well-documented. Every profession comes with a set of entry-level grades. The grade you start with is determined by your education background and work experience. Then, as you go into your profession, you will be granted grade increments that be reflected in promotions. These pay grade increments typically occur as a result of performance and reviews by the supervisors of the employee.

The grades are determined in a range from 1 to 15, with 15 being the most high. They are generally written with the abbreviation “pay plan” with a hyphen and the grade number after it, as follows: The General Schedule grade 13 would be identified by using the letters “GS13.

From 1 to 15, the top class is grade 15, while the lowest is grade. Grades are typically written using the pay plan abbreviation, with a hyphen and the grade number following it. This is as shown below: GS-13 would be the abbreviation used for General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The word “step” refers to the duration of time an individual has been employed by the government. Each grade is comprised of 10 steps, with the first one being the least challenging. The increase in the number of steps will be automatically rewarded in regular increments, provided that the minimum performance criteria meet.

In the course of 52 weeks, your first three steps are automatically sent to you. After the 104-week period (2 months) in the current step, the next three-step increase is granted. After 156 weeks, the final three phases are revealed (3 three years). Once you reach the last tenth step, you will be unable to climb your step any further.

It is possible to get step increases as a reward for great performance in certain situations. Quality Step Increases refer to step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

The location is the final factor considered when determining pay rates in a given region. Locality adjustments aim for ensuring that federal pay are comparable to those of equivalent private sector workers in an area. If you’re employed in particular region of the country the General Schedule pay rate is boosted by a specific percentage.

There are currently 47 distinct neighborhood districts for you to select from! Cities with major populations like New York, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco are home to the majority of locality rates within the United States. If you live in one of these cities you might see increases of up to 14 percent up to 30%.
