There are three parts to The General Schedule pay system that can be used to determine your salary under General Schedule. General Schedule system. The three most important considerations are:

  • Grade.
  • Step.
  • Locality.

Grade

The relation between grade and the professional route is well documented. Every profession has its own list of entry-level grades. Your initial grade will be determined by your academic background and your work experience. Then, as you go along your path, you will receive grade increases that result in promotions. These pay grade increments are often granted as a result of performance and assessments by supervisors on the performance of the employee.

The grades are determined on a scale of 1 to 15 which is 15 being the highest. They are generally written with the abbreviation for pay plans, with a hyphen and the grade number after it, such as follows the General Schedule grade 13 would be marked with the letters GS-13.

From 1 to 15, the most prestigious class is grade 15, whereas the lowest is grade. Grades are typically composed using the abbreviation “pay plan” a hyphen, and the grade number after it. For example, below: GS-13 could be the abbreviation used for General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The term “step” refers to the amount of time an individual has been employed by the government. Each grade is composed of ten steps, with the first step being the most difficult. The increase in the number of steps is automatically rewarded in regular increments, provided that the minimum requirements for performance meet.

After 52 weeks, the initial three steps will be sent to you. After 104 weeks (2 years) in the current step, the subsequent three-step steps are added. After 156 weeks, the final three phases are made clear (3 years). After you complete the 10th step, you’ll be unable to raise your step any further.

You can get step increases in recognition of your accomplishments in certain conditions. Quality Step Increases are used to refer to step increases based on performance (QSI).

Locality

The location is the final factor considered when determining pay rates within a specific region. Locality adjustments aim to ensure that federal salaries are comparable to those of equivalent private sector workers in the specific region. If you’re employed in a specific region in the country and you are a federal employee, your General Schedule pay is increased by a specific percentage.

At present, there are 47 distinct neighborhoods to select from! Major metropolises such as New York, Washington, D.C. as well as San Francisco are home to most of the locality rate in the United States. Depending on where you reside, you may see a rise of 14 percent up to 30%.
