From 1 to 15, the highest class is grade 15, and the lowest grade is grade 1. Grades are typically recorded using the abbreviation “pay plan” an hyphen, and the grade number following it. As you can see below: GS-13 is the abbreviation of General Schedule grade 13.

Step

The word “step” refers to the amount of time an individual has been employed by the government. Every grade has 10 steps with the first step being the most challenging. Increasing the number of steps will be automatically rewarded in regular increments, as long as the minimum requirements for performance are met.

After 52 weeks, the first three steps are automatically sent to you. After two years (2 year) in the current step, the subsequent three-step increments are granted. After 156 weeks, the final three phases are revealed (3 year). After you complete the tenth step, you will be unable to raise your steps any more.

Locality
